Baffling BS Larry Becker and Lee Earle
Effect
"The bumper sticker," begins the performer as he shows a selection of them - all of which are cut in half, "is a source of 5-Star wisdom often using four-letter words. They're a short form expression of attitude, philosophy, and humor. You can find them at truck stops, novelty shops, and bargain swaps."
He shows the halves of two different bumper stickers saying, "If you cut them in half and mismatch them, the results can be interesting." (The audience will laugh at a couple of the combinations, we designed them for that purpose.)
Placing a business envelope in full view, he continues, "There are halves of two different bumper suckers in here (they can be seen through the address window) that usually combine with others to get an amusing reaction."
"One of you will choose another half from these," the performer continues, spreading the stack of severed stickers face up for a nearby participant. "As you can see, there are more than two dozen random possibilities. Which one would you like."
After the helper freely chooses one of the halves the Mentalist instructs, "That was an intentional choice, influenced perhaps by color or subject matter. Next, you will select one unseen."
He turns the stack of half-stickers face down and reminds, "Because it's selected blindly, and randomly, it will be a surprise for both of us"
"I'll keep you in suspense a moment longer," remarks the performer, as he withdraws one of the sticker-halves from the envelope (with its back toward the audience) to align with the unseen sticker-half.
"This combination doesn't work," the performer informs, tucking it back in the envelope and pulling out the other one inside. "Hopefully this combination will be better." He aligns it with the randomly selected half, smiles, and tucks the pair partially in his breast pocket, still (and always) fully visible to the audience.
"Let's try the half sticker you picked earlier," suggests the Mentalist, reaching for the participant's piece. He aligns it with the remaining half from the envelope and his eyebrows go up. "Well, this is weird," remarks the entertainer. He turns them around: they are opposite ends of the same bumper sticker!
"But I promised you something funny," reminds the Mentalist, removing the pair of half-stickers from his breast pocket. "And this is funny!" He holds them up for everyone to see; the second pair is also a perfect match!

Cruise Control by Becker and Earle
Effect
A participant is given four different full color travel brochures, each highlighting worldwide selections of exciting vacation cruises.
After looking them over, the spectator then gives three of them to other people in the audience. The four participants combine their thoughts to create an imaginary dream cruise, including all prices for their choice of ocean liner and destination, hotel stay over, shore trips, and guided activities. They also freely select the month in which they will travel, how much spending money (by grabbing a random handful of travelers cheques) they ll take with them, and even their seating preference for shipboard meals. All their vacation expenditures are openly recorded on an envelope the performer holds (for large audiences, you can use any size pad at all - the envelope is simply more convenient when working for small to medium size audiences).
Then all the expenses are visibly totalled and that figure is also clearly written on the envelope or pad. When the enclosed, typewritten letter is removed and read aloud (as participants visually read along), it even confirms their choice when they embark, seating reservations, and ? printed in large, bold type ? the total cost of the dream cruise. Following a hurricane of applause, the performer notes there is a P.S. in the letter. When the post script is read aloud, suggesting an amount of mad money to take on the cruise. Remember the travelers cheques? They are now counted aloud for the first time and their total exactly matches the amount suggested in the letter! And the applause becomes a typhoon!

Imagine sitting at a restaurant table with a group of people, saying, "Before you decide it's impossible for words alone to influence your choices, consider why corporations spend 26 billion dollars a year in product and brand advertising."
"A friend in the ad business, John Shrell, agreed to share a few insider tips to show how it works," you continue, "With the condition that he be allowed to verify my success. So when we finish, we'll have to make a phone call to satisfy him. He owes me lunch at (a local fine restaurant) if I show him I've learned enough. Here's his toll-free number." You write it on a paper napkin of a packet of Sweet'n'Low and toss it on the table in full view.
Nearby items are quickly grouped in the center of the table - a salt shaker, a spoon, a glass, a packet of Equal, a napkin - the normal things found on most restaurant tables. Then you continue, "All but one item will be eliminated in the fairest way possible."
Here's how it's done," you explain, "Everyone will take turns pulling two items slightly away from the others. One of them will be eliminated and the other will be returned to the center. But first, I'll attempt to influence your decision by using marketing terms. Just keep in mind, the final choice will always be yours." As each pair of items is selected, you describe them with advertising hyperbole and 'buzz words', "You are deciding between a clean, shiny spoon and a sensible, conventional pepper shaker," or "You're evaluating the fragile shaker full of sweet, delicious sugar and a sturdy cup for a man-sized serving of robust coffee."
One by one the participants around the table cull the assortment of items until only one remains, for example, the napkin. "I'm surprised," you admit, "how dependable certain words are for influencing choices."
"But don't take my word for it," you continue, "Let's call John to verify." Offer your cell phone to the person holding the number you wrote earlier. "Go ahead, make the call. Let John know he owes me lunch." A voice mail message answers the call on John's line; he apologizes for being unavailable to take the call, and asks the caller to leave a 30-second message - especially if the caller is holding the thought of a napkin!

An anytime - anywhere - any card miracle!

Spread a shuffled deck face up on the table.
Someone thinks of a random playing card - value, color, and suit - and writes those thoughts on the back of a business card you hand him (for example he writes 7, black, Spades). You square the deck and leave it face down on the table.
Next, he is asked to dial the toll-free number printed on the card (any phone can be used) to connect with a friend - a corporate executive, who moonlights as a numerologist.
When he reaches her voicemail (she always seems to be out of the office) after the standard "Leave your name and number," she adds, "The destiny card and lucky number for today are: the 7 of Spades and 35!"
That's when you ask your participant to deal down to the 35th card - it's the 7 of Spades!
